Gene Harris, 72, of Columbia, died on Friday, June 11, 2021. Born in Hamtramck (Detroit), Michigan on November 28, 1948, he was a son of the late Frank and Helen Bawol Harris. Gene graduated from St. Florian High School and Macomb Community College.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Chris Harris; children, Jennifer Harris (Dr. Hershel Smith), Susanne Verzwyvelt (Michael), Kevin Harris (Elizabeth); granddaughters, Kayden, Blakley, Riley and Piper; many nieces and nephews; a brother, Larry Harris, of Twinsburg, Ohio; sister-in-law, Charlotte Ford; as well as a sister and brother-in-law, Jackie and Ed Jaskulka, of Michigan; and many, many friends of over 40 years. He was preceded in death by his sister, Delores Kupski Walper; sister-in-law, Phyllis Guadagni; brother-in-law, Ken Ford; and nephews, Kenneth Ford and Timothy Harris.

Gene retired from IBM after a nearly 40 year career of service in Michigan, Alabama, New Jersey and South Carolina. Following his retirement, he started a home inspector business and operated it for several years. He was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Gene was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was honorable, kind and generous beyond measure and will be truly missed for his sense of humor. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, being a “soccer” dad/coach, and reading. Gene also enjoyed fixing anything. He used to say “I can fix anything but a broken heart”.

The family wishes to thank Lexington Medical Center and the Agape Hospice House of the Midlands for their compassionate care. They would also like to thank the University of South Carolina Medical School where Gene donated his remains for the advancement of medical education.

Gene will be greatly missed, and his loved ones can take comfort in knowing he rest in peace with the Lord.

A visitation will be held from 3 until 5 o’clock, Saturday, June 26th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia.
