Brookland United Methodist Church is partnering with 12 Springs Community Church, the West Columbia Police Department and the West Columbia Fire Department to host a “Back 2 School Giveaway” Aug. 22.
The event was formed by two local pastors who partnered together in hopes of helping the community.
“The pastor of 12 Springs Community Church, Scott Robinson, grew up in our church and this was the church he found the Lord in. We talked about doing a community event together and the conversation came up about a back to school giveaway. When we decided to do it, we reached out to the West Columbia Police Department and West Columbia Fire Department to help us gather supplies,” said Joey Yandle, Media Coordinator for Brookland United Methodist Church.
The giveaway event will run from 2 to 6 p.m. and will be held in the parking lot of Brookland United Methodist Church. According to Yandle, school supplies and backpacks will be handed out to the first 500 kids in line. Wedge, from Taylor Street in Columbia, will be providing face masks with frames to all children at the event.
The Back to School Giveaway will be held outside in the form of a drive-thru in order to maintain social distancing. “All of our volunteers passing out supplies will have masks and gloves to make sure everybody is kept safe,” said Yandle. The event will feature live worship music performances and free shaved ice from Kona Ice of Sumter/West Columbia.
The churches have already surpassed their donation goal on most supplies, but is still in need of backpacks and hand sanitizer. Anyone can drop off donations at one of three locations: Brookland United Methodist Church, the West Columbia Police Department or the West Columbia Fire Department.
