Residents living or working near McEntire Joint National Guard Base in lower Richland County may hear some loud noises Thursday and Friday. According to South Carolina Air National Guard officials, there will be intermittent explosions as part of a scheduled military demonstration.
The 169th Fighter Wing will be hosting US Army Corps of Engineers demolition personnel, which will use conventional explosives to blow up parts of an unused taxiway on base.
The craters will simulate battle damage, according to officials, and the taxiway will then be repaired. The action is part of an Expedient and Expeditionary Airfield Damage Repair Joint Capability Technology Demonstration that will be taking place on the base during the remainder of August.
"We appreciate the understanding of our neighbors here in Richland County for recognizing the important role McEntire plays in our nation's defense," said Col. Akshai Gandhi, commander of the 169th Fighter Wing. "That being said, every measure to reduce the amount of noise associated with this training has been taken."
