The South Carolina Department of Transportation is implementing an intersection improvement project to build a traffic circle at the Fish Hatchery Road/Busbee Road intersection in the Gaston area of Lexington County.

The intersection will be transitioned beginning Friday from its current "all-way" stop configuration to a round-about traffic pattern with yield control. SCDOT officials said the change is necessary to remove the temporary pavement from the center of the traffic circle, and complete construction of the center island and concrete truck apron.

The final asphalt surface will be placed once the center is completed, and final pavement markings will be installed. The project is expected to be completed by early fall.

Construction on the round-about is funded by the increased state gas tax enacted in 2017. The increased revenue supports SCDOT's 10-Year-Plan to rebuild roads and bridges across the state, after 30 years of deferred maintenance due to lack of funding.

Drivers traveling through the work zone are asked to be aware of equipment and crews working near traffic at all times.
