Riverbanks Zoo and Garden's 33rd annual Lights Before Christmas presented by BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina is underway for the holiday season.

The popular holiday lights special has also been nominated for "Best Zoo Lights" in USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice contest. Those interested in voting for Riverbanks can cast daily votes online until Dec. 7.

Timed tickets are required for the Zoo’s annual holiday lights spectacular which runs select evenings through Dec. 30.

From 5 – 9 p.m. nightly, guests can experience a display of more than one-million twinkling lights, a variety of light-up images and a 30-foot animated story tree playing popular Christmas songs.

Modifications have been made to accommodate guests in a safe manner. Guests can expect additional spacing measures in Santa’s Village to allow for proper social distancing. Visits with Santa begin at 6 p.m. each evening through Dec. 23. Riverbanks' Jingle Bell Bonfire also has been modified to enable guests to maintain a six-foot distance and additional locations for toasting s’mores have been added throughout the zoo.

Riverbanks members will receive at least one free visit to Lights Before Christmas with a valid membership card and photo ID (guest passes will not be accepted). General admission is $12 for adults and $10 for children ages 2 – 12. Children under 2 are admitted free.
