Local golfers have nearby access to several of the top public-play golf courses in the state, according to a new list released by the S.C. Golf Course Ratings Panel.

Three courses close to the Midlands — Aiken Golf Club, the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence and Orangeburg Country Club — are ranked among the state’s best 30 courses available for public play by the Ratings Panel. Those clubs are also joined by Mount Vintage Golf Club and The River Golf Club in North Augusta on the list of the top five public courses in the Midlands region. (Orangeburg, a private club, is included in the list because it allows outside play through hotel and vacation packages.)

The Ratings Panel includes up to 128 players and coaches, golf industry representatives, news media members and business people with significant knowledge of South Carolina courses and an appreciation of course design. Members consider the routing, variety, strategy, equity, memorability, aesthetics and overall golf experience at each course, according to executive director Mike Whittaker.
