Spencer Rattler is set as the Gamecocks starting quarterback

The Gamecock football team held its final scrimmage of preseason camp Saturday night at Williams-Brice Stadium. Media was not allowed in and there was no post scrimmage briefing by head coach Shane Beamer. His next media session will come Tuesday afternoon. The Gamecocks are gearing up for their season opener Sept. 3rd against Georgia State in Columbia.

The Gamecocks scored a major recruiting victory Thursday with a commitment from defensive tackle Xzavier McLeod of Camden. The Gamecocks beat out Georgia, Michigan and Florida for one of South Carolina’s most highly regarded prospects. They now have 18 commitments for their 2023 class.

The men’s soccer team played Gardner-Webb to a 1-1 draw Saturday night at Stone Stadium in their final exhibition before opening the season Thursday at Ohio State. Bryce Griffith scored the USC goal. The Gamecocks also had a 1-1 draw with Duke in their other exhibition match.

The Gamecocks were picked fourth in the Sun Belt Conference Coaches Pre-Season Poll. West Virginia is the favorite followed by Marshall and Kentucky.

The 12th ranked women’s soccer team played top-ranked Florida State to a 0-0 draw Thursday night at Stone Stadium, the first time in program history the Gamecocks had played the #1 team to a draw. The Gamecocks continue their season Sunday at home against East Carolina. The Gamecocks are 6-0-0 all-time against the Pirates.

USC was picked by the SEC coaches to finish third in the league standings this season behind Tennessee and Arkansas.

Former USC assistant baseball coach Monte Lee is returning to the program as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for Mark Kingston. Lee spent the last seven seasons as the head coach at Clemson. He was the head coach at the College of Charleston before that. Lee will replace Chad Caillet who is leaving after one season to return to Hattiesburg, MS for personal and business reasons.

The men’s basketball team now has their non-SEC schedule locked down. The Gamecocks will play Clemson in early November and also participate in a Thanksgiving tournament in Charleston.

The SEC slate for the women’s basketball team was revealed during the week. The opener will be at home Dec. 29 against Texas A&M. The other home games will be against Auburn, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, LSU, Florida and Georgia. The road trips will be to Georgia, Mississippi State, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss and Tennessee.

Gamecocks star Aliyah Boston is the lone active college player invited to the 2022 USA Basketball Women’s National Team training camp in Las Vegas in early September. Former Gamecocks Allisha Gray and A’ja Wilson were also among the 29 invitees.

Rising sophomore golfer Nathan Franks reached the Round of 16 at the US Amateur in Paramus, NJ before losing in one extra hole to Ben Carr of Georgia Southern.
