The day started with a touch of grey, followed by a very large box of rain, but it all gave way to a happy sunshine daydream and fans thanking the Columbia Fireflies, Five Points and Stillhouse “for a real good time.”

The Fireflies opened the final weekend of the season at Segra Park with a doubleheader against Kannapolis and Grateful Dead Night, and an early rain delay could not spoil the fun.

The Five Points Association and “mom and pop hippie shop” Loose Lucy’s joined the team to provide lots of entertainment to go along with the baseball. The Jerryfest Dancing Bear threw out the first pitch to get the party started and remind fans that JerryFest returns to Five Points Oct. 3 (after a cancellation due to the pandemic in 2020).

The Fireflies passed out free Grateful Dead Night T-shirts specially designed for the occasion to the first 1,000 fans to arrive, and the team wore special jerseys in honor of the iconic band. The jerseys were auctioned off to the highest bidding fans.

On the concourse in right field, the Columbia Community Drum Circle brought rhythm and lots of dancing to the ballpark. When the rain relented, local band Stillhouse stepped onto the concourse in center field and delivered home run-quality covers of songs by the Dead and other favorites.

“Baseball and the Dead? I can’t think of a better way to spend a Friday night,” said Hallie Jones as she applauded Stillhouse’s cover of the classic “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You).”

Behind third base on the patio, the JerryFest booth offered lots of souvenirs and photos with Fireflies mascot Mason as well as the Dancing Bear.

The Fireflies close out the final homestand of 2021 with games Saturday and Sunday at Segra Park. Saturday is Wands and Wizards Night, and on Sunday the first 1,000 fans will receive an antique Fireflies Tin Sign. More information and tickets are available at
