South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) and The Harry Hampton Wildlife Fund announced on the Palmetto Sportsmen's Classic Facebook page Wednesday that the annual event has been canceled for 2021.

The Sportsmen's Classic is the state's largest hunting, fishing and outdoor show. It was also canceled in 2020 when the initial business closures were mandated due to COVID-19 concerns.

Show organizers set 2021 dates for March 26 through 28, however those dates have now been scrapped.

In Wednesday's announcement posted to Facebook, the reason behind the second cancellation comes after a growing number of COVID-19 cases statewide.

The statement read the following:

"The Harry Hampton Wildlife Fund and SCDNR set two criteria for the event to take place this year: 1) number of cases in South Carolina; and 2) access to vaccinations. COVID-19 cases across South Carolina and the country have increased in the last month, and vaccines will not be available to the majority of the public until late spring to late summer."

Close to 40,000 people have attended the Palmetto Sportsmen's Classic within the past few years, according to the post.

The Palmetto Sportsmen's Classic is now scheduled to be held March 25 through 27, 2022 at the State Fairgrounds.
