Richland County Coroner Gary Watts released the name of the person who died Wednesday in Columbia. The South Carolina Highway Patrol, Columbia/Richland Fire Department, and EMS responded to a single motor vehicle collision just after midnight.

The driver of a 2004 GMC Envoy was traveling southbound on I-77 near Bluff Road when she lost control and crashed into the wood lines ejecting the female passenger, according to Watts.

Jessica Whitworth, 26, of Airport Boulevard, Columbia, was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy revealed that Whitworth died as a result of blunt force trauma. The driver was transported by EMS to Prisma Health Richland Hospital.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol continue to investigate this incident.
