There's a chance one hotel in downtown Columbia could be named the Best Historic Hotel of 2021 by USA Today. Hotel Trundle, located at 1224 Taylor St., is one of the 20 contestants in the 10Best Readers' Choice Contest.

According to hotel officials, they were selected by a panel of experts based on the hotel's regard for Columbia's historic roots, paired with their creative, individualist concept. Along with the panel's recommendation, the 10Best editors also took into consideration the guest reviews and industry awards to select contestants.

The original structures' preservation was given priority when renovations were underway for Hotel Trundle in 2018. The historic buildings were previously occupied by Rose Talbert Paints, Western Auto and Powell Furniture. Owners Rita Patel and Marcus Munse paid homage by incorporating a few tributes to the former businesses into their hotel, creating a feeling of "new meets old."

Patel said they are so excited for the recent nomination.

"To be acknowledged by such a large franchise as USA Today as part of their Top 20 is incredible for us," she said. "It's exciting for Hotel Trundle, but also for Columbia as a city."

The hotel that receives the most amount of votes will be named the winner. As of Thursday afternoon, Hotel Trundle was in fourth place. The contest is live until Aug. 16 at noon, and votes can be cast once a day. The winner and the full top 10 list will be announced Friday, Aug. 27 at To cast a vote in the contest and see all the contestants, click HERE.
