The opportunity to join the “the world's greatest team” just got better-up to $50,000 better, according to Lieutenant Colonel Brian Meister. "The U.S. Army is the world's greatest team. It's not a competition, said Meister.

The recent offering is the most significant bonus offered for newly qualified individuals who sign for a six-year active-duty enlistment. In the past, enlistment incentives for full-time soldiers could not exceed $40,000.

The total incentive package is based on a combination of incentives offered for the selected career field, individual qualifications, length of the enlistment contract, and how soon training begins. The Army offers about 150 different career fields, including a cyber school at Fort Gordan in Augusta, Georgia for individuals exploring high-tech-specific careers.

Many businesses throughout the Midlands have felt the staffing impact of the pandemic and the U.S. Army is not exempt. Worker shortages have created recruiting obstacles, and according to Maj. Gen. Kevin Vereen, who leads U.S. Army Recruiting Command. the Army is competing for the same talent as the other services as well as the private sector and must have the ability to generate interest in the current employment environment.

Aside from the career-based bonuses, there are also “quick ship” bonuses for individuals prepared to head to Basic Combat Training within 90 days. These incentives range from $2,000 to $9,000¬—the sooner an individual ships, the higher the dollar amount.

There are additional incentives for signing up for Airborne or Ranger schools. Opting to jump from airplanes can get a recruit $10,000, while becoming Ranger-qualified can bring up to $20,000. As part of the Army Civilian Acquired Skills Program, foreign language skills can be worth up to $40,000 for specific career paths. The combination of these incentives could earn new recruits up to the $50,000 maximum.

In addition to the monetary incentives, Meister pointed out several other options that may make the Army more attractive in the current employment environment, such as station of choice, two-year enlistments, and medical and educational benefits.

Individuals in the Midlands interested in learning more about the enlistment incentives can visit any recruiting office located in Lexington, Irmo; or Sandhills. Or visit Columbia Army on Instagram , Facebook, and at to learn more about Army career options and the benefits of military service.
