What began as a peaceful gathering at the State House Saturday to protest the death of George Floyd, evolved into violence initiated by a group of individuals at Columbia Police Headquarters.
An outbreak of vandalism centered in Columbia's Vista followed the protest despite Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin's emergency curfew that began at 6 p.m. Several Vista businesses were damaged including Mellow Mushroom, Carol Saunders Gallery, Blue Marlin, Carolina Western Pub, and Experience Columbia.
At Blue Marlin and Carolina Western Pub, vandals also damaged the interior including furniture, bars, equipment and bathrooms. A fire broke out at the pub.
There was a heavy police and firefighter presence amid the scene, with police working to enforce the curfew and firefighters working to put out the flames.
