The South Carolina Department of Transportation notified the public around 4:30 Thursday afternoon that the Koon Road bridge over I-26 in Richland County is closed to all traffic.

Earlier Thursday morning, it was hit by an illegal, oversized load, according to SCDOT's Public Information Coordinator, Brittany Harriot.

Motorists experienced delays on I-26 westbound near mile marker 99 (about two miles before the Peak exit) while inspectors completed their review and worked on the bridge. According to various reports on Facebook from drivers, the traffic was at a near stand-still around 3:30 p.m., and was backed up for several miles.

Motorists in the area were advised to use caution and follow the posted detour route. Any additional information will be provided when received.
