Baseball will be active at Segra Park in Columbia after all this summer.
The postponement of the Columbia Firefies' baseball season and cancellation by the S.C. American Legion has opened the way for the S.C. American Baseball League. Consisting of teams playing independent of American Legion, the league has 21 senior and several junior league teams competing this summer.
The league will hold 12 Segra Series games at the ballpark, starting Thursday with a doubleheader. At 3 p.m., the Sumter and Lexington Post 7 junior teams will face each other, followed at 6:05 p.m. with the senior game between Chapin/Newberry and Lexington Post 7.
It's the first of four games at Segra Park for Post 7, two against Chapin/Newberry. Other Midlands teams taking the field in Columbia include West Columbia, Richland Post 215 and Camden Post 17.
Tickets are $6 at the gate.
