A week filled with news of cancellations seemed almost forgotten in Chapin Saturday night, as hundreds of people gathered for an oyster roast and street party co-hosted by the town and the Tipsy Toad Tavern.

The Swingin' Medallions provided live music for the event, and shag lessons before the show helped make sure everyone was ready to dance into the night.

Chapin Pharmacy and Palmetto Fine Arts & Custom Frame Gallery stepped forward to provide supplies for extra hand sanitizing stations for those attending.

The roasting oysters were accompanied by a variety of other treats for sale along Beaufort Street, which already shows the beginnings of a new upscale shopping center. Proceeds from the event will be used to replace damaged sidewalks nearby and provide an even better welcome for visitors.

“This is just a perfect small town night,” said Anna McMillan.

Seriously? You do not think social distancing is appropriate given the way COVID is making its way through the US? Nah, let’s hold the festival....and watch COVID spread and turn this little town into Italy in 9 days!
