In South Carolina, the sign of football season is a little different than other states and areas. From high school football to college, and then the NFL, it’s an event when the pigskin picks back up. The weather doesn’t quite change until later in the year but we still get our football. Schools going back in session excites sports fans just as well because that means Friday night lights returns.

High School football starts off traditionally with the jamborees, or “kickoff classics” as they are more currently labeled. This weekend is the final dress rehearsal for high school football teams, as next Friday it all starts “for real” in Week 0.

The mini-games are normally split up in two quarters/halves depending on format, and most every player gets a chance to appear in the game. Unlimited timeouts are normally allotted for officials, players, and coaches – mainly due to the heat.

These glorified scrimmages are good for players to get under the lights in a game-like atmosphere, coaches to see how their kids execute from practice, and of course the fans to see their favorite teams.

As standard with these jamborees, from the media and even fan perspective, you want to see how everybody looks in pads. You want to see returning players and how they have progressed/matured and also get a glimpse at some of the rising stars in newer roles. But most importantly, we all want these kids to to come out healthy and start the season off next week 100 percent.
