Kyle Carpenter

The Super Bowl’s Tribute to America video featured Johnny Cash’s “Ragged Old Flag” and included Gilbert’s Kyle Carpenter. Carpenter is a US Marine Corps veteran and a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient.

The National Football League aired the patriotic salute to the flag on Sunday during the Super Bowl.

State Sen. Katrina Frye Shealy, who represents Gilbert, said via Facebook, “So Proud of Our own Kyle Carpenter.” She also linked the Super Bowl video. Click here for a link

To produce the video, FOX Sports crews took Carpenter, to Jackson County, North Carolina to shoot the video, according to WRAL-TV (Raleigh.) It aired just before the National Anthem at the Super Bowl.

Carpenter received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery during Operation Enduring Freedom in November 2010.

Carpenter and his Marine unit were on patrol in the Helmland Province of Afghanistan when a grenade landed near him and a another soldier.

Carpenter threw himself on the explosive to protect fellow Marine Cpl. Nick Eufrazio, and others, from the blast.

Carpenter was barely alive after the explosion. His injuries were described as “catastrophic.” He went into cardiac arrest and flat lined three times as a result of his injuries.

His survival is called miraculous.

In February of 2019, the Batesburg-Leesville Department of Motor Vehicles announced it has named its state building in honor of Carpenter. Shealy sponsored the resolution honoring Carpenter.
