A new kind of dessert is waddling its way to the Midlands this fall.

Vampire Penguin, a shaved snow dessert shop, will call Lexington and Forest Acres home by October.

Owner Jeannette Moseley holds the master license for the Vampire Penguin franchise in South Carolina, rounding out her total number of locations to four. She also operates locations in North Augusta and Aiken. Some of Moseley's family members operate locations in Powdersville and Anderson.

"It is not shaved ice, not ice cream, it is literally the future, it’s snow in every flavor," Moseley said. "All of our desserts are three to four times less sugar and calories than ice cream and frozen yogurt. They're also all gluten free and vegan and we have lots of dairy free options as well."

Moseley and her husband Ryan came across the franchise while living in Florida after their daughter made a visit to the dessert shop and recommended it to her parents. The couple was put in a compromising position during the pandemic as her job as a massage therapist and Ryan's job as a singer on the beach were put to a forced halt.

The Moseley family moved back to South Carolina after learning Jeannette's father was diagnosed with cancer. During their transition, the Moseleys were brainstorming new career ideas.

"I just kept thinking about Vampire Penguin and my husband told me no four times," she said. "Finally I convinced him and fast forward we opened our North Augusta location and six months later we opened our Aiken store."

Vampire Penguin offers a variety of shaved snow flavors and toppings. Popular flavors include strawberry cheesecake, summer crush, Mexican candy, smoreos, peanut butter cup, the Vampire Penguin and more.

The Lexington store will be located in McCauley Square on Sunset Boulevard (across from Target) which is also home to Antai, The Blended Bakery and Travinia Italian Kitchen.

The Columbia location will be located at 106 Percival Road.
