There was a new restaurant sign installed Thursday morning that may have caught the eye of drivers on Highway 378 in Lexington. Tropical Grille will be coming to 5449 Sunset Blvd. in the former Smashburger location.

Franchise owner Adam Akers said the restaurant specializes in healthy, fast-casual Cuban food. Items like the Cuban roasted pork bowl, the South of the Border chicken wrap, baked sweet plantains, and Yuca fries will all be available on the Tropical Grille menu.

The 2,450 sq.-ft. building will offer dine-in and patio seating. Additionally, Akers said the restaurant is known for its carryout, curbside delivery and catering services.

There are other Tropical Grille locations in Charlotte, Greenville and Charleston - but this will be the first in the Midlands.

Akers said he is looking forward to bringing the restaurant to the area. "It's very exciting. My wife Lisa and I have been working on this deal for some time," said Akers. The couple just moved to Lexington in April and he said so far, they are loving it.

"Even with all the craziness going on, we've had really great interaction with the whole community," he said.

The Lexington Tropical Grille will be managed by Kenny Gamble and is anticipated to open around early December. Akers said on-site hiring will be coming soon.
