The development is continuing in Columbia's BullStreet District.
A groundbreaking ceremony by Hughes Development Corporation was held Thursday at noon on the WestLawn, across from REI and behind the newly-opened Starbucks.
The event marked the beginning of construction on a five story, 79,000 sq.-ft. office building developed by the corporation. The project will be contributing to the largest redevelopment project on the East Coast.
The building will be the largest of its kind in Columbia and the first to be constructed using cross-laminated timber. The first floor will house retail stores while the upper floors will feature Class-A office space.
Unique touches including wood ceilings and walls will combine modern infrastructure with old, Southern charm. The project design combines open public spaces with a walkable environment and a vibrant, urbanist take on Bullstreet’s historic properties.
In addition to master developer of the Bullstreet District, Hughes Development Corporation, architectural firm Perkins and Will, construction company Brasfield & Gorrie, LLC, civil engineering firm Davis & Floyd, and structural engineering firm Britt Peters were also in attendance.
Future tenant, Robinson Gray Stepp & Laffitte, LLC, participated in the groundbreaking and will occupy a majority of the top two floors, including the fifth floor’s private rooftop terrace.
Columbia Mayor Stephen K. Benjamin spoke to share his gratitude with everyone involved and voice his excitement for the future.
“A vision that very few people were willing to invest in, but that a lot of you saw an opportunity here and an opportunity to invest in this great city, and I can’t tell you how excited I am. Thank you. The vision is coming to life, and I’ve been so excited to have been a part of it all happening," he said.
The building is located between Freed Drive and Williams Drive, between Bull Street and Segra Park. It is expected to open in April, 2022.
