Nephron Pharmaceuticals is working to ramp up production of respiratory solutions to treat symptoms of COVID-19.
Nephron, in Lexington County's Saxe Gotha Industrial Park just off of I-77, is one of the nation’s top two producers of respiratory treatments. The current demand for Nephron's pharmaceutical products is spiking. Because of the high demand, Nephron is setting records in its volume of sales.
Nephron makes inhalation solutions and suspension products to treat respiratory conditions.
On Tuesday, Nephron owner Lou Kennedy said that those suffering from the coronavirus need treatment for their lungs.
Two companies in the United States make 98 percent of the nebulizers that immediately treat the lung issues caused by COVID-19. Kennedy said because there is such a high demand, Nephron is ramping up production of its much-needed products.
Kennedy also said Nephron's eight production lines are able to produce about 110-million inhalers a month.
Nephron wants to increase that amount up to about 170-million a month. For that to happen Kennedy said the FDA will have to allow Nephron to open six more filling lines to produce more inhalation solutions.
