Supporters gathered Tuesday afternoon in Lexington as Modern Exterminating Compay, Inc. owners held a ribbon-cutting to mark the official opening of their newest office. The facility will be the headquarters for their expansion into the Lexington area, located at 5223 Augusta Rd.

The decision to expand came after owner Glenn Matthews realized their growth as a company would best be served by having a physical location in Lexington.

“We're local, we're family-owned and we've been around for 65 years, and we're very involved in the communities," Matthews said. "...And if you call up here, I'll answer the phone. We think that kind of sets us apart, not only from our national competitors but also our local competitors."

Modern Exterminating has been serving the Midlands since it first opened in 1955 by Matthews’ grandfather. He said his family is proud to have maintained the company's success throughout the years.

“I'm the third-generation owner, my granddad, my dad and me. There's a statistic that I think, it's like 12% or probably even less than that really, of companies that survive three generations," he said.

Matthews said he is very excited to now have the office branch open, both for the business and personally. He said bringing in the new location has been a way he's made an individual mark on the company.

There were about 45 people who attended Tuesday's ribbon cutting, according to Matthews. He said he was appreciative to everyone who came out to show their support.

“When you do something like a ribbon cutting, you don't know if there's going to be anybody to show up," he said. "So I'm just glad that, you know, so many people came out and supported us.”

Modern Exterminating's office hours office hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and available by phone at 803-765-2315.
