The “Top Job Tuesday” featured employer this week is Little Pigs Barbecue.
Little Pigs Barbecue opened in 1962 on Rosewood Drive and moved to its current location at 4927 Alpine Road in northeast Columbia in 1997. During that time, the restaurant has garnered top ratings from local newspapers and been named by Southern Living Travel as the best destination to eat in South Carolina, according to owner Champ McGee.
Little Pigs offers a buffet, takeout and catering.
“We do 3,000 up to 3,500 catering jobs a year,” McGee says. “It could be anything from35 people meeting at a business to a 200-person wedding — in fact, we had two of those this past Saturday.” The company caters anywhere in central South Carolina to as far away as Charlotte.
McGee says the restaurant’s number one job need is a person to work the front line, making plates to go, keeping the buffet line full, and handling tea and lemonade.
“The perfect candidate has a sweet smile and is very friendly with the customers,” he adds.
Little Pigs also needs staff for catering jobs who can go out, set up and serve meals, aswell as people to do drop-offs. Some cooking is involved, too, McGee says.
“The ideal candidate must be at least 25 years old for insurance purposes, have a clean driving record, be able to lift 40- to 50-pound catering boxes, and have a great personality to go out and mingle with the folks when they’re doing the catering.”
McGee says the company offers employees medical insurance and a 401(k) after 90 days on the job “just like the big companies do.” But the top job perk is working in a family-run organization.
“We’ve got a son and daughter and nieces and nephews and in-laws with us, so it’s a great atmosphere to work. And we’ve been around a long, long time — there’s no chance of us going anywhere.”
