Columbiana Centre is temporarily closing its doors due to the threat posed by the coronavirus. The mall closed at 7 p.m. Monday.

The mall will close indefinitely beginning Tuesday, according to Brookfield Properties Retail Group, the company that manages the mall.

“After many thoughtful discussions, we have made the difficult decision to temporarily close our shopping centers,” reads a statement from Brookfield Properties Retail Group. “While there will not be access to the common areas of the properties, we understand the importance of tenants with essential resources. For that reason, tenants with exterior-facing entrances, including restaurants, that are considered essential retail will still be available to you."

As of Monday, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported five deaths from the coronavirus in South Carolina. There are 298 confirmed cases in 34 of the state's 46 counties.

Columbiana Centre, which houses 95 stores according to the mall's website,  modified its business hours last week to run from noon until 7 p.m. on Monday through Saturday, with its regular Sunday schedule from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster issued an order, Monday, directing law enforcement officers to disperse public gatherings of three or more people unless in their homes. The order is part of the effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Part of the reason for it was to prohibit crowds gathering in meeting spots, including mall parking lots.
