Riverbanks Zoo and Garden’s last elephant moving to new home
Representatives from Riverbanks Zoo and Garden announced Thursday morning that the last remaining elephant, Belle, has a new home.
According to the announcement, Belle will be joining herd mates, Brittany and Ruth, this fall at the Milwaukee County Zoo in Wisconsin.
“The MCZ recently opened a brand new elephant habitat, called Adventure Africa. The exhibit’s 20,000 sq.-ft. indoor Elephant Care Center features a recreation room, individual stalls, and an expansive area for enrichment activities. There’s also a nearly two-acre outdoor yard with plenty of room to roam,” the announcement read.
Riverbanks Zoo’s second elephant, Robin, died unexpectedly last week. She was 49 and lived years beyond her life expectancy, according to the zoo’s director of animal care and welfare, John Davis. Belle is 38 years old.
