Thousands of Midlands residents could find new flexible, temporary work — and some spare pocket money —with the U.S. Census Bureau this fall and into next year.

The Census Bureau conducts a nationwide census every 10 years. The next census will be taken in 2020, but the Census Bureau is already recruiting to fill almost 6,000 positions across Lexington, Richland and Kershaw counties.

Jobs include address canvassers responsible for confirming the addresses of all dwellings before the census begins, and census takers who will collect data into the peak operations through May of 2020. Other positions include recruiting assistants, office staff and supervisory staff.

According to the Census Bureau’s hiring website, census takers can earn $15.50 an hour in Richland County and $14.50 an hour in Lexington County. Work-related mileage and expenses are also reimbursed.

The results of the census have real-world impacts — and consequences — for communities across the country, including the Midlands. An accurate count is crucial for determining the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives; planning for roads, schools, and hospitals; and ensuring a fair share of the billions in federal funds divvied out every year.

“Census data assists federal, state and local governments in distributing benefits fairly and allocating funds appropriately,” said Carl W. Blackstone, president and CEO of the Columbia Chamber. “Billions of federal funds are allotted to local communities based on census data. Much has changed since the last census in 2010 and it’s important for everyone to participate so our state receives the appropriate amount of support it’s due.”

Eligible applicants for Census Bureau jobs must be at least 18 years old, have a valid Social Security number, and be a U.S. citizen. The application window is open through September. Those interested can apply online  or call 855-JOB-2020 for more information or assistance.
