Save Our Water campaign combines fun with volunteering

Columbia’s rivers and streams are a big part of the capital city’s beauty, but that beauty is easily ruined by those who tarnish it with litter. On Sunday, a crew of volunteers spent their time cleaning up the mess and saving our waters in ways both conventional and unusual.

It began with around two dozen volunteers gathering at Maxcy Gregg Park and getting wet and dirty. The group went up, down and into Rocky Branch Creek and collected more than 1,500 pounds of trash, with kids and adults working side by side.

Many of the group, organized by Congaree Riverkeeper, then headed to Craft & Draft on Devine Street to relax, cool off, and continue contributing to the cause.

Craft & Draft serves brews by Sweetwater Brewing Company, and the brewer is working with Costa Sunglasses to eliminate plastic products which account for so much litter.

All Sweetwater products purchased at Craft & Draft and other local partner businesses this summer’s Save Our Water events help support Congaree Riverkeeper’s mission to keep local waterways clean and healthy.

Each Sweetwater purchase also comes with a raffle ticket for a Sweetwater kayak, with the winner to be selected Friday, Sept. 9 at Jake’s on Devine.

The next Save Our Water event is a parking lot party at Curiosity Coffee on Aug. 9. Details are available on the Facebook event page.
