This year’s Tax Free Weekend will take place from August 2 to August 4. The weekend will be especially helpful for those doing their back to school shopping. Items including computers, clothes, school supplies, shoes, bed linens and bath towels can be purchased with no sales tax. However, there are items that do not apply to the holiday like makeup, jewelry, furniture and any items purchased with layaway or other deferred payment plans.

Jennifer Hellenbeck, manager at the Staples on Devine Street said her store is preparing for the rush next weekend. “We have an in-stock guarantee and the staff will be staffed up,” she said. Hellenbeck mentioned she expects a lot more customers than usual because of back to school shopping during tax free holiday.

In addition to the tax-free items, Staples will be holding a deal allowing customers to receive 20 percent off school supplies if they also buy a backpack. “We actually have a big event, a teacher event this weekend,” Hellenbeck said. There will be vendors, non-profits, and food trucks as well as giveaways for teachers, students and parents. More information about events at the Staples on Devine can be obtained by calling 803-787-5916.

The South Carolina Department of Revenue put the tax free holiday into effect in 2000. Each year, shoppers save between two-to-three million dollars over the weekend. For a full listing of included and excluded items as well as frequently asked questions, visit the Department of Revenue’s website.
