Southern Guitar Festival and Competition coming to Columbia

The Southern Guitar Festival will be making its way into Columbia this weekend. The event will begin Friday at 4 p.m. and continue through Sunday. The festival’s main attractions are arguably the concerts from classical guitarists, but will also include workshops and competitions for all ages.

The festival was born from Artistic Director Marina Alexandra’s vision to bring something akin to Charleston’s Piccolo Spoleto Festival to the Midlands. In 2011 Alexandra contacted every classical guitarist she knew, and offered them a position on the board. And thus, the Southern Guitar Festival and Competition was born.

The mission of the festival is “to inspire and educate all music lovers.” There will be concerts and competitions for individuals and ensembles. Lectures, workshops and the crowning of Guitar Idol SC are also lined up on the schedule of events. All competition rounds, workshops and lectures are free and open to the public.

The event will be held at the Main Branch of the Richland County Library at 1431 Assembly Street in Columbia. The full schedule of the festival is available on The Southern Guitar Festival’s webpage.
