State champion softball, Dixie Youth teams to be honored at Blowfish opener
Before kicking off the 2019 baseball season Thursday at Lexington County Baseball Stadium, the Lexington County Blowfish will recognize a local team which just concluded its state championship season.
S.C. High School League Class 5A softball champion Lexington High School will be recognized prior to the opening pitch. The Lady Wildcats defeated J.F. Byrnes in the Best-of-three series, rallying from a game one loss to win the final two games.
This marked the second straight year a Lexington County team has won the Class 5A title with White Knoll claiming it last year.
Led by first-year head coach Laurie Epps, Lexington won 17 of its last 18 games to finish 26-4. The Lady Wildcats also had two players selected to the S.C. Softball Coaches All-State team in catcher Sarah Gordon and University of South Carolina-bound senior rightfielder Hannah Kumiyama.
Kumiyama was also selected to the North-South All-Star Game taking place June 18-20 at USC-Aiken.
In addition, Lexington pitcher and University of Arkansas commit Allie Light will pitch to a Blowfish batter during the third inning of the team’s season-opener against Forest City.
“This is an amazing opportunity to see something unique,” Blowfish General Manager Theo Bacon remarked. “Allie, and the entire Wildcats softball team, have made us so proud. To see her throw a pitch and go one-on-one against a Blowfish at Lexington County Baseball Stadium will be a moment fans remember for quite some time.”
The Blowfish will also be honoring the Dixie Youth Midlands Minors World Series Champions during pregame ceremonies. The Midlands Minors play their home games at the fields in Pine Ridge. The entire Midlands Minors team will throw out a first pitch and be recognized for their amazing accomplishment of bringing a World Series title to Lexington County.
