Lexington’s Virginia Hylton Park expanding by 8 acres with new features
Representatives of the Town of Lexington announced over the weekend that big changes will soon be coming to Virginia Hylton Park.
According to officials, the 6.5 acre park will be heavily renovated and upgraded to include an additional 8.25 acres.
“…Providing Lexington with a playful, social, and recreational space for all ages,” the statement read.
Renovations and additions will include:
-Virginia Hylton Park signage for recognition on Southlake Drive
-Primary park entry gateway with information kiosk, restaurant building and plaza for engraving donations
-Picnic area and shade garden with soft path nature trail
-Linear water feature “sprayground” with youth seating/meeting area and sidewalk chalk
-Expanded playground area to include new pavilion
-Reorient amphitheater seating toward pavilion with arbor-covered swings at back of seating area
-Teen gaming and social area (includes life-size checkers, group seating arbor swings, cornhole, horseshoes, joggling board, etc.)
-Added woodland buffer vegatation with plant identification markers
-Proposed contemplation garden/yoga area
-Re-establish waterfall gardens area or convert to dry creek bed/rock garden display area
-Bridge access to west side of creek
-secondary park entrances
-Woodland nature trail area with individual and group workout stations and floating staircase
-Open lawn picnic area with bench swings under existing shade tree
-Cafe table seating area and shade trees adjacent to existing amphitheater
Existing park attractions include a paved walking trail, special needs playground, Twelve Mile Creek with an overlook and waterfall, along with picnic shelters accompanied by grills. A covered stage area can also be reserved for special events.
