Home Team BBQ welcomes hundreds of hungry guests on opening day
Home Team BBQ, the newest restaurant to open in Columbia’s Five Points, welcomed hundreds of anxious customers Monday morning.
“We had about 30 or 40 people at the door when we opened at 11,” Chief Operating Partner (and pitmaster) Aaron Siegel said. “We had a full restaurant by 11:15. Everybody’s keeping us on our toes right off the bat.”
The Charleston-based restaurant has now opened its fifth location at 700 Harden Street, in the former Harper’s building. Siegel said they were excited for the opportunity to expand to the Columbia community.
The Home Team barbeque concept is not solely based on one style, according to Siegel. “We pay homage to traditional techniques of barbeque, but I wouldn’t put our barbeque in a ‘box’ to say we’re Carolina style, or we’re Memphis style. We cook what we think tastes good, and that’s what we’ve always done,” he said.
In addition to barbeque, Siegel said their diverse menu offers other dishes including tacos with homemade corn tortillas, wings accompanied by an Alabama white sauce, and fresh salads. “Since the beginning, we’ve tried to surround the centerpiece of barbeque on our menu with other things people also enjoy,” he added.
The menu also highlights an ever-changing bar program featuring expansive American whiskey selections, and frozen cocktails. Home Team offers local and regional craft beers alongside national favorites.
The restaurant can seat approximately 240 guests and additional 40 outside under a covered patio. Inside seating offers both low and high top tables, and booths. There are also seven indoor televisions for sports fans.
Home Team BBQ is open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. A limited, late-night menu is offered from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., and weekend brunch is offered from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is restaurant parking surrounding the building with more than 70 marked spaces.
