Brookland-Cayce picks up dramatic win in state baseball playoffs

It did not come easy, but Brookland-Cayce recorded a 5-4 win over Beaufort in the S.C. High School 4A Baseball Playoffs, Saturday.

The Bearcats took a 3-0 lead, only to lose it when Beaufort scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning. BC managed to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. And eighth-grader Hayden Thomas had the game-winning RBI with Reed Charpia scoring in the bottom of the eighth inning. Pitcher Aubrey Richardson got the win for the Bearcats. The game was at BC.

“We looked good, but then they went up after we made a couple errors,” said BC’s head baseball coach Rusty Charpia. “My eighth-graders had struggled, but they stepped up at the end of the game. We have a very bright future.”

With the win, BC advances to take on Airport Monday. Airport is undefeated in the double-elimination tournament. BC would have to beat Airport twice to advance in the Region VII playoffs. Beaufort is eliminated from the playoffs.

“We’ve got to go over to Airport and play,” said Charpia. We’ll have to play almost mistake free baseball to have a chance.” Charpia also said ace pitcher Adam Krissinger will start versus the Eagles.
