Vernice Z. Hinson
Vernice Z. Hinson, 91, of Columbia, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family Wednesday evening, April 17, 2019. Born in Bamberg, SC, on September 23, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Clarence and Thyra Goodwin Zeigler.
The funeral service for Mrs. Hinson will be held 12:30 o’clock, Tuesday, April 23rd, at St. Andrews Baptist Church, 230 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service beginning at 11:30 o’clock in the church atrium. Burial will be held following the service at 2 o’clock, in Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
Mrs. Hinson graduated from Bamberg High School in 1945. She attended secretarial school in Georgia. She also attended the University of South Carolina. She met Alfred while attending USC and they became married February 8, 1947 and were married for 63 years until his death in 2010. She was a stay at home mother until all of her children started school. Her places of employment include U.S. War Assets Administration, Richland County School District One. Her final employment ended with 26 years of service with Colonial Life Accident & Life Insurance Company. Her first and most rewarding job there began in 1973 as a Reader for Donald Capps who was blind. She continued to work there in other positions until she retired in 1999.
Survivors include her three children, Deloris Wren Loftis of Irmo, Nancy Barton of Columbia, and Joseph Neal Hinson of Columbia. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Stephanie Dodson (B.J.), April Hughes (Josh), Brent Brazell, Kimberly Shugart (Bowen), Patrick Loftis (Melissa), Leanne Watson (Mike), Ryan Dent (Kisha), Jessica Dent Yarborough, Bryan Hinson (Alisha), and Corey Hinson; and 10 great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sister-in-laws, Ruby Hinson and Sarah Evans (Wendell). In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Neal Hinson, as well as her daughter, Carol Brazell-Mietus.
The family would like to thank Dr. Tad Venn, Christy and Vivian with Palmetto Senior Care for the excellent care she received. Also Tammy, Rachel, Delores and Chaplain Karen with Lutheran Hospice for the wonderful and compassionate care they gave to her.
