Moonlight Cemetery & Secrets from the Grave Tours return Thursday

It’s almost time for Historic Columbia’s popular Moonlight Cemetery & Secrets from the Grave Tours. Both sets of tours are conducted in the historic Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia. The first will be held Thursday.

“One hundred and sixty years of history will come to life during our popular Cemetery Tours! Grab your flashlight as we tour one of Columbia’s oldest cemeteries and discover centuries of stories etched in stone on the markers and headstones found within Elmwood Cemetery’s acres of carefully planned grounds. The perfect after-work activity, our cemetery tours are an event the whole family will enjoy,” the organization’s announcement reads.

The first tour at 7:30 is held to study the symbols found on many of the markers and headstones in the cemetery. The second tour, one held at 8:00 and another at 8:30, will be focusing on the lives, burials, cemetery plots and tombstones of families/prominent citizens from Columbia’s 19th and 20th centuries.

According to Historic Columbia’s website, the 7:30 tour is sold out. However, the organization will be conducting additional tours one Thursday in each month now through October:
May 9
June 13
July 11
August 8
September 12
October 10

Secrets from the Grave tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children/Historic Columbia members. Moonlight Cemetery Tour tickets are $15 for adults, and $7 for children/members.
