Buttercream Dreams offering specialty sweets in West Columbia
There’s a new store in West Columbia where locals can get their sugar rush. Buttercream Dreams, located at 1230 C. Avenue, held its ribbon cutting Thursday afternoon, followed by a reception filled with cakes and sweet treats.
Owner Jolene Bailey said she first began baking specialties from home several years ago, making cupcakes and treats for her daughter’s all-star cheerleading team. “Then other moms would say ‘I want to order this-and-that,’ and asked if I could make a cake,” she said. “So I was like, sure let’s try cakes.”
As her orders continued to come in, Bailey said she found herself baking long hours into the night. “I worked my full time ‘real’ job, then I’d bake at night. Until about 2 or 3 in the morning I’d be baking. So it just got to be a whole lot,” she said.
Bailey’s friend Rhonda Dinkins, who owns formal wear store Tylar Rose, posed an idea that Bailey couldn’t refuse. “Rhonda said, ‘hey why don’t you just come into the shop?’ We work really well together. So it was kind of a spur-of-the-moment thing,” said Bailey.
She opened her bakery in the Tyler Rose building in December, and said she couldn’t be happier with her decision. “I’ve finally figured out this is what I really want to do, all the time,” she said.
Bailey’s store specializes in cupcakes, all made with different flavors of homemade buttercream icing. Currently, her most popular flavor is almond, with almond-flavored icing. Additional flavors offered at her grand opening included raspberry, caramel, dark chocolate, and pineapple with coconut icing.
Bailey has created daily specials like pound cake slices on Wednesdays, turnovers on Thursdays, and cheesecake slices on Fridays. “I’m still steadily trying to add new stuff and flavors all the time,” she said.
Buttercream Dreams is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. More information about the bakery can be found on their Facebook page.
