Charlotte brewery comes out on top in Colatown Beer Wars
The battle raged fiercely all afternoon Saturday at West Columbia Riverwalk, but in the end, a visitor emerged triumphant over all the hometown hopefuls.
Charlotte-based Sugar Creek Brewing Company took home first place in the Colatown Beer Wars, the kickoff event for the 2019 Columbia Craft Beer Week.
The winning brew, the Big O Blood Orange IPA, received the most votes from those attending, who were able to sample 19 beers and one cider, but without knowing the names or makers of the drinks.
The Big O, according to the Sugar Creek website, is “a West Coast style IPA brewed & infused with California grown “Moro” Blood Oranges. This unique citrus fruit creates a deeper & more penetrating citrus flavor than the usual fruit-forward IPA. Hints of raspberry & grapefruit interweave harmoniously with flavors created from novel dry hopping techniques. Copious amounts of Citra & Mosaic hops transform during fermentation into a bouquet of tropical & floral aromas. A touch of toasted specialty malt lends a subtle fresh baked-bread character.”
Attendees strolled around the Riverwalk parking lot sampling the beers, and then moved to the amphitheatre to listen as Prettier Than Matt performed followed by DJ Phil Blair.
Columbia Craft Week continues Sunday with brunch at Liberty Taproom in the Vista from 10-2, featuring beer mimosas such as the Sofie-mosa from Goose Island, the Hasselhoffer Mimosa with Schofferhoffer and the classic Manmosa with Hoegaarden.
