Coroner releases autopsy results for two found dead after gas leaks at Allen Benedict apartments

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts released information as a follow up to an earlier release from January 18, regarding the deaths of two individuals who died in their apartments at Allen Benedict Court in Columbia.

According to Watts, toxicology test results confirm that Calvin Witherspoon Jr., 61, and Derrick Caldwell Roper, 30, both of Allen Benedict Court, died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning.

The residents of the apartments have been evacuated after additional gas leaks were found by the Columbia Fire Department later that evening.
