Coroner reveals inmate’s cause of death, found in cell

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts released the name of an inmate who died after being involved in an incident at the Broad River Road Correctional Institution, at 4460 Broad River Road in Columbia.

According to Watts, Isaac Laird Starke, 52, was discovered in his cell Sunday.  He died at the scene.  An autopsy indicated that Starke died from asphyxiation due to ligature strangulation.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office, SLED, and the SC Department of Corrections are investigating the incident.
