Deputies warning Richland County residents of phone scam, caller claiming to be police officer

Richland County deputies notified the public of a recent scam that was brought to the department’s attention.

According to RCSD, there have been scammers calling victims, posing as a law enforcement officer, providing the name of an actual deputy. They mention that there is an issue with the victim’s information or account.  The scammer then requests the victim purchase and provide the numerical data of a gift card to correct the error.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department wants to remind citizens that real deputies would never call with any such request.

If residents receive a call similar to the situation or are unsure of its legitimacy, do not give any personal information, and notify the department at 803-576-3000.
