Lizard’s Thicket employees preparing to serve thousands on New Year’s Day
Many people will be sleeping in New Year’s Day and enjoying a relaxing holiday away from work. That will not be the case for Lizard’s Thicket employees, as they prepare for their busiest day of the year.
Community Relations Manager Sarah Krisnow said New Year’s Day is by far the busiest day for all of the 15 family-owned locations.
The restaurant is known for its variety of southern food, and many southerners count on their annual New Year’s meal of pork chops, collard greens and black-eyed peas (said to bring good luck for the year ahead). Even though Lizard’s Thicket will have their full menu available, Krisnow said most people will be ordering the same three items all day.
“I would say 90 percent tomorrow is going to be pork chops, black-eyed peas and collards with corn bread,” she said.
Krisnow said they will be serving about 12,00o customers anywhere between 9,000-10,000 servings of black-eyed peas and collards, and 6,000 pork chops. Many customers get large amounts to-go.
Additional employees are scheduled for the occasion, and Krisnow said all are asked to get a good night’s sleep and arrive well-rested. “Everyone works New Year’s Day, it’s all hands on deck,” she said. “But our employees love it. They get some money in their pocket and they’re starting the new year off with a bang.”
All collards are grown locally at Rawl Farms in Lexington. Restaurants will be ready to serve lunch by 11 a.m., and will remain open until 9 p.m. Visit lizardsthicket.com to view all locations and additional information.
