Bierkeller Columbia serves up beer by the river

The sun peeked through the clouds Saturday just in time to provide good weather for dozens of people to gather at Columbia’s Riverfront Park for food, beer and crafts.

Bierkeller Columbia hosted the holiday market and biergarten event, serving up German beers alongside food from the Wurst Wagen. Guests took advantage of the warm weather to toss balls and frisbees, check out the holiday decorations, or just sit and watch the river.

“It turned into a good day to be outside having a cold beer,” said attendee Greg Kitchens.

Information from the Congaree Riverkeeper about preserving local rivers was available, along with merchandise for sale to support the cause.

Park rangers were also on hand, and helped guests make wreaths and paper lanterns. The lanterns will be useful for the next big event at Riverfront Park: Friday’s winter solstice lantern parade and holiday biergarten.

That event starts at 5 p.m. on December 21. Traditional German holiday beverages from Bierkeller will be available along with cocoa and marshmallows for roasting.

Observatory staff from the SC State Museum will be there to tell guests about the solstice and its astronomical significance, and will , and bring telescopes to allow all to view the (almost ) full moon and Mars if the skies are clear.

More information on the solstice event is available on Facebook.
