Need an activity to beat the summer heat?  Historic Columbia is incorporating history and fun into an afternoon event for adults to enjoy.  The fourth annual Historic Happy Hour and Water Balloon Battle is Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m.  There will be about 4000 water balloons prepared for the evening.

Participants will break into teams, and learn about military tactics through history and battle, on the grounds of the Robert Mills House and Gardens.  Then to carry out the tactics, guests will use water balloons to throw at the opposition.

According to Director of Marketing and Communications Anna Kate Twitty, the education team who created the event intended for it to be a fun experience for all.  “You almost don’t realize you’re learning about history in the process,” she said.  Twitty also mentioned there will be drill sergeants from Fort Jackson on site to explain the three different military tactics that will be used during the water balloon battle.

“Every year the event has grown and grown,” Twitty said.  “Having an excuse for a bunch of adults to run around with water balloons, you get to act like a kid again and you’re learning at the same time.”

After the tactics are carried out and the balloons have been thrown, participants are invited to relax with drinks and light appetizers on the grounds of the historic site.  All participants in Historic Happy Hour events must be 21 or older.

Historic Columbia members can purchase a ticket for $20.  The cost for non-member tickets is $25.  Purchase tickets and read about the event HERE.
