National Night Out is Tuesday, Aug. 7, but the Columbia Police Department just couldn’t wait that long.

The department hosted its 11th annual National Night Out Kickoff, with officers welcoming the people they serve and protect to Spirit Communications Park for an evening of fun and getting to know each other.

“That child has not stopped dancing since we got here,” said Jasmine Stone, as she watched her 7-year-old granddaughter doing the Electric Slide alongside a police officer.
The event included music, snacks, and opportunities for residents to learn about the services offered by CPD, from assisting the elderly to keeping children safe to free home assessments identifying ways to better protect against burglars.

“They’re out there to help us and I think it’s so good, especially for the kids to know they can always go to a police officer if they need anything,” Stone said.

Following the kickoff, numerous National Night Out events are scheduled across the Midlands Tuesday. The Lexington Police Department will host festivities at Lexington Square Park, Columbia’s Hyatt Park and Keenan Terrace neighborhoods have planned a school supply drive and community gathering at 950 Jackson Ave.

For information on other local events, contact the Richland County Sheriff’s Department Community Action Team or the Columbia Police Department, or visit the National Night Out website.

National Night Out began in Pennsylvania and has been observed nationwide since 1984 as an effort to build community and promote partnerships with law enforcement.
