5 things you need to know about REAL ID
If you are a resident of South Carolina and plan to board a domestic airline after 2020 will need to get a new S.C. driver’s license and identification card.
The new item, called a REAL ID, will also be needed to enter a federal building or a military installation after Sept. 30, 2020.
Drivers can get the card at the 67 locations of the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles. To get it online go to: scdmvonline.com. REAL ID costs $25.
Five Things to Remember about REAL iD
* You do not need a REAL ID to drive, vote, apply for or receive federal benefits for
which you’re entitled, enter a federal facility that does not require ID, access or receive
life-saving services, or participate in law enforcement proceedings or investigations.
*South Carolina’s new driver’s licenses and identification cards, including those compliant
with the federal REAL ID Act of 2005, are now available for purchase at SCDMV
branches across the state. There’s no change in the price of any card the SCDMV issues.
* Do not rush to an SCDMV branch to change your card. There’s no need to burden
yourself with changing your card now. You should remember that cards have changed,
but you have 2.5 years to change your card before you should experience anything
differently at airports, secure federal buildings, or military installations across the
country. You may view wait times for all SCDMV branches at www.scdmvonline.com.
* If interested in purchasing a REAL ID, the correct documents must be on file with the
SCDMV. You are not eligible to purchase a REAL ID if the correct documents are not
* You may be able to purchase your REAL ID driver’s license online if all of the required
documents are on file with the SCDMV.
