1,000 runners getting ready for Spring Girls on the Run 5k, April 29
The streets of Cayce will be full of runners on April 29. More than 1,000 runners are getting ready for the Spring Girls on the Run 5k. There will be 27 teams from the Midlands running.
WHAT: More than 1,000 runners are expected to hit the streets for Girls on the Run 5K. This inspirational and noncompetitive event is presented by the City of Cayce and open to the public.
WHEN: Saturday, April 29, 2017
Festivities begin at 7:30 a.m., 5k begins at 8:30 a.m.
WHERE: The Historic Columbia Speedway in Cayce, SC
DETAILS: The GOTR 5k is the culminating event of the 10-week spring season for Girls on the Run and Heart & Sole. Completing the 5k gives these young participants a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. 480 girls representing teams across Richland and Lexington counties and as far away as Sumter and Kershaw will participate. Coaches, running buddies, family members, friends and supporters also will fill the course.

Girls on the Run is a national physical activity-based positive youth development program for 3rd-8th grade girls. Participants develop and improve competence, feel confidence in who they are, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care, create positive connections with peers and adults and make a meaningful contribution to community and society. Each session is led by trained volunteer coaches that guide and mentor the girls. The ten-week program concludes with all participants completing a celebratory 5k event which gives them a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals.
