West Cola man killed in crash identified

A West Columbia man who died in a Saturday night single-car crash has been identified.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher on Sunday said John G. Thornton, 29, was killed when his vehicle ran off the road and struck a utility pole. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fisher said the accident occurred on Dogwood Road near Fish Hatchery Road at approximately 9:30 p.m. on December 17.

An autopsy to determine the precise cause of his death was scheduled for Sunday, but Fisher said Thornton suffered multiple body trauma after he was ejected in the crash.

No one was in the vehicle with Thornton when the accident occurred. Fisher stated the victim was wearing his seatbelt.

Meantime, the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the accident, Fisher stated.
