School’s ‘buddy bench’ idea will bring a smile to your face
Everyone deserves a friend.
That’s the message and the goal of a program at one Lexington County elementary school.
Students at Deerfield Elementary School in Lexington have created a new way to help build friendships on the playground.
As part of Kindness Day on Oct. 28, the school unveiled new “buddy benches” with the entire school gathered outdoors to celebrate.
The idea for buddy benches was initiated by Deerfield Elementary student Maille White last year. Students can sit on the bench to signal that they don’t have a friend to play with, and other students are encouraged to invite them to play.
Maille, her sister Moira, and fellow fifth-grader Hannah Hanson led the buddy bench dedication at Monday’s event.
The buddy bench celebration was the culmination of “Random Acts of Kindness Week” at Deerfield Elementary.
Throughout the week, teachers and students also participated in a #kindnesscounts Twitter challenge, in addition to donating cans of food to Lexington Interfaith Community Services.
