Blaze Pizza to open northeast location this fall

A new pizza shop is coming to the Village at Sandhill in northeast Columbia. Blaze Pizza, known for its  “Fast-Fire’d” food concept, is opening a new location in the mixed-used development off Two Notch Road.

“We chose the Village at Sandhill because of strong sales for other establishments with the plus of being located near the largest movie theatre in Columbia,” said franchise owner Chris Paphites.

The first Blaze Pizza location in Columbia opened in January near Columbiana Mall in the Harbison community. Paphites, who also owns the Harbison location, said sales have been better than the company’s projections, with 4,500 pizzas sold each week.

Blaze Pizza offers create-your-own pizzas in a fast-casual dining atmosphere similar to Chipotle. The restaurant uses sustainable materials including pizza boxes, cups and cutlery to have minimal environmental impact.

The location in Village at Sandhill will replace the former Al-Amir restaurant at Town Center Place, according to Charles Kahn of the firm Kahn Development.

Construction is expected to begin on the restaurant this summer, and the location is expected to open in late September or early October, Paphites said. Up to 50 employees will work at the store, and applications eventually will be available online and at the restaurant.

Paphites said about up to four more locations will be open in Columbia, including one near the University of South Carolina.
